Reverse engineering the world: a commentary on Hoffman, Singh, and Prakash, "The interface theory of perception".

چکیده
Does perception hide the truth? Information theory, computer science, and quantum theory all suggest that the answer is "yes." They suggest, indeed, that useful perception is only feasible because the truth can be hidden.

Perceptual representation, veridicality, and the interface theory of perception.
Hoffman, Singh, and Prakash (henceforth, HSP) argue that perception was not selected for veridical representation, hence that, contrary to a very widespread consensus, there's much less of the latter than you might expect in perception. And they put forward an alternative "interface" theory, on which perception is an adaptively useful but truth-obscuring veil between perceiver and perceived. Bu...
متن کاملVarieties of perceptual truth and their possible evolutionary roots.
Hoffman, Singh, and Prakash (2014) observe that perception evolves to serve as an interface between the perceiver and the world and proceed to reason that percepts need not, or even cannot, resemble their objects. I accept their premise, but argue that there are interesting ways in which perception can be truthful, with regard not to "objects" but to relations, and that evolutionary pressure is...
متن کاملThe Interface Theory of Perception.
Perception is a product of evolution. Our perceptual systems, like our limbs and livers, have been shaped by natural selection. The effects of selection on perception can be studied using evolutionary games and genetic algorithms. To this end, we define and classify perceptual strategies and allow them to compete in evolutionary games in a variety of worlds with a variety of fitness functions. ...

متن کاملThe question what of subject-based commentary and its difference with Quran to Quran commentary
Subject-based commentary is one of the methods more used by commentators in recent decades than before. In this method, commentators may take a Quranic subject on the basis of inter-Quranic or metaphysical fields, or on the grounds of individual and social life. This method differs from that of Quran to Quran. The latter would lead to explanation and deep perception of the meaning of Quranic wo...
